The MOCAP Systems in Gamifying Sports and Wellness Analysis project (MOCAPPE) has now wrapped up its first year of operation. The project is inno-developing the three sports, exercise and XR environments of Rovaniemi’s educational operators both physically and functionally.
These environments contain a lot of new motion capture and well-being technology, which the project experts have been working hard on. The aim is to get new benefits and uses out of the environments and to develop their use more widely in Rovaniemi.
We have aimed for this through multidisciplinary cooperation with project implementers, partners, local companies and other operators.
In 2025, the University of Lapland carried out several testing workshops investigating the immersiveness of XR and developed two ready-made Proof-of-Concept demonstrations with partner companies.
In 2025, Lapland University of Applied Sciences and Santasport focused together on developing Santasport’s sports testing environment. A goal-oriented running game was implemented on a large Rodby treadmill, where the player has the opportunity to test and develop their running fitness in different environments. The aim of the game implementation was to create interesting environments and make the treadmill react in real time to the shapes of the terrain.
The game implementation is in the final stages, and we will see the final results of the running game in the first half of 2026. Santasport has started and will continue to test the game implementation with different target groups.
What's next in 2026?
In 2025, we participated in several stakeholder events and organized workshops in the project. In 2026, we will continue active networking activities both in Rovaniemi and more widely, and current events will be announced on the project website and on the project implementers’ social media.
Lapland University of Applied Sciences will move to Sports Lab in early 2026 to develop a game implementation on the theme of perceptual motor skills, and the University of Lapland will continue implementing XR proof-of-concept demos with companies.
