Ideation begins in Santasport’s Testing and Design workshop!

Mar 4, 2025 | Blog, Event

Professionals and students from sports, technology, service design and many other backgrounds gathered for our project workshop on February 20 to test and brainstorm ideas for sports technology. The event began with the Testing & Training environment, where people got familiar with the Rodby exercise platform and other sports equipment in the facility, such as shooting practice.

From the Testing & Training environment, we moved to the Sports Lab, where we got to know the Vicon mocap cameras, as well as the MOTEK environment and the balancing and observation games MOTEK offers.

After the presentations and testing of the facilities, we moved to coffee, presenting the project’s activities and brainstorming sports/exercise games and other development ideas for the facilities at Santasport. The motion platforms, cameras, and virtual environments inspired a variety of game ideas: for example, ice hockey, cycling routes, parkour, downhill skiing, skateboarding, controlling underwater drones, and much more.

In addition, the facilities showed potential for a variety of developments, which would be needed, for example, for athletes to perform more independently with the equipment. Next, FrostBit’s technical team will start working on the first part of work package 1 together with sports experts, and some kind of sports game will start developing in the Testing & Training environment!

Stay tuned for current events in the project, as the university will soon also organize the first XR Lab event related to the project.

Experts from Lapland University of Applied Sciences and Santasport have been developing a gamified running application for the large Rodby treadmill for the sports institute’s training and testing facilities during 2025. The running game is entering its final stages, and several demo events and testing days have already been held in this late autumn, where feedback has been collected for the future development of the game.

The project has been active in diverse collaboration throughout the year. A lot of time has been spent on technical testing and development – and it has been part of the learning process, from which we have been able to benefit together with different teams. It is great to witness effective cooperation between different fields, and that is also one of the major goals of the project: to combine the expertise of technology, sports and exercise, as well as virtual reality and service design in the region. In this way, we will grow our own expertise and be able to spread it more widely.

We are looking forward to what 2026 will bring, because there is a strong development spirit within the project! Great demos are expected, and we hope that SMEs and other actors in the region will also be able to test and utilize the environments and their technological possibilities more widely in the coming years.

Follow the project results page in the future for updates.
